We had turkey for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. We got them fresh and unfrozen from Safeway, since they were not frozen, thawing wasn't needed. My steps of cooking the turkey are the following:- Preheat oven to 325°
- Lightly fill the turkey cavity with stuffing
- Sprinkle the outside of the turkey with pepper, salt, and thyme
- Place the turkey, breast side up, onto an oven-safe pan with rack
- Place three small pieces of butter on top of the turkey
- Move the pan into the oven and let oven cook the turkey for as many hours as needed for it to be done(It took 3 hours for my 15-pound turkey.)
- Measure the temperature of the breast with meat thermometer to make sure it's above 165° at the end of baking
- Turn off oven, let turkey stand for 15 minutes before carving
