I activated a Chinese input method on my desktop running Debian(a Linux distribution) last week, here are my steps:

1: Install Debian package "ibus-pinyin"

# apt update
# apt install ibus-pinyin

2: Add "Chinese(Pinyin)" in Settings->"Region & Language"->"Input Sources"

3: Select "Chinese(Pinyin)" input method when entering Chinese characters

4: If text editor "vi" is used, enable setting "esckeys" in file "~/.vimrc"(Without this setting, the Chinese characters entered were not displayed in program "vi".)
